Updates and Daffodills!

In my previous post, I designated Saturday March 26th, (“Make your own Holiday” day) "Mom is out of ICU and soon to be home again Day".  And it was the perfect designation.  Mom did indeed come home from the hospital last Saturday.

After learning just how critical a low sodium level can be, we are now more aware of watching salt intake – not just too much but also to make sure it is enough.  We learned this  issue a hormonal one and more often affects older women.  Once she received enough sodium - slowly over two days - she returned to her old self and was ready to head home – with a much wiser family in tow!

Halleluiah!!

Additionally, our snow is just about all gone and all the daffodils Jim carefully planted for me last fall are finally breaking through the ground!!  Spring has sprung in Minnesota!!

Halleluiah, again!!

Much Better than Farmville!

I admit I've been having my fun farming in Farmville.  It seems to satisfy a need to plow, plant and harvest; one that hasn't been satisfied since we moved out of our home and into a townhouse.  I've never been an avid gardener but I did enjoy putzing with my flower garden (which Jim built and my dad designed).  Planting and placing a pot of flowers is just not the same as really digging in the dirt.

But yesterday was different.   We were given the opportunity to really garden!  Dad officially turned over his two tiered flower garden (and his old antique trowel) to Jim and I to care for.  At age 90, Dad decided he was ready to simply enjoy the garden - not work it.   And so with great enthusiasm Jim and I dug in yesterday; first spending the morning roaming the garden centers for a mass of annuals and then spending the rest of the day planting, moving, weeding and watering.  It was the most fun I've had in ages.  Today will be round two (even though my body is protesting just a bit)!

Tiny Signs of Spring

We almost missed these little crocus.  They are so small and so buried in the rough that only today when they are just about spent did we notice them.  We shouldn't have just relied on our view from the window; we should have been walking down to the pond to check the changes up close.

Of all the spring bulbs we've tried in the rough pond edge, only these tiny little crocus survive year after year.  I keep saying I'm going to plant more but I have yet to do that.  Because by fall, that area is so thickly overgrown it's almost impossible to plant anything.  But maybe this will be the year.  It's always fun to have flowers early like this.  And they sure are hearty - obviously much heartier than I am!
