Lily the Christmas Pug

Lily the Christmas Pug

Puppy Number 5 had 3 brothers and 1 sister.  And 1 very nice Mother who loved her 5 puppy-kids more than anything else in the world.

She made sure they had enough food and water and time to play; something all kids need to do.  This made Puppy Number 5 especially happy as she loved to play, more than anything else in the world.

She ran and jumped and tumbled head-over-tail all day long.  She never got tired, even though her 3 brothers and 1 sister and her 1 very nice Mother did.  But that didn’t matter to Puppy Number 5.  She just continued to run and jump and tumble head-over-tail all by herself.

One day Puppy Number 5 noticed that one her brothers was gone.  Now there were only 2 brothers and 1 sister to play with.  This made her sad but her very nice Mother, who loved her puppy-kids more than anything else in the world explained that her brother had gone to live with another very nice family and that he was playing and jumping and tumbling head-over-tail with them.

This made Puppy Number 5 very happy and she ran and jumped and tumbled-head-over-tail some more – knocking over a potted plant.  But her very nice Mother just smiled, gave her a lick and nicely asked her to be more careful. She loved her very nice Mother.

It wasn’t long before all of Puppy Number 5’s 3 brothers and 1 sister had left to run and jump and tumble-head-over-tails with new families and she was left all alone.  But her very nice Mother explained that this was the way God had planned it.  She told Puppy Number 5 that she was an extra special puppy with very special running and jumping and tumbling-head-over-tail skills and that it would take a very special home to properly care for her.  It couldn’t be just any family; it had to be an extra special one.

So Puppy Number 5 continued to run and jump and tumble-head-over-tail while she waited for that extra special family her very nice Mother had said God promised.

One day, right before Christmas, a very nice man came to see Puppy Number 5.  He got on the floor and held her. But she jumped out of his lap and ran and jumped and tumbled-head-over-tail. The very nice man smiled. He even began to laugh.  She made him very happy.  And his laughter made her very happy.  And she ran and jumped and tumbled-head-over-tail some more.

Then Puppy Number 5’s very nice Mother gave her an extra special lick and told her that her extra special family had come to take her home.  And so they had.  The very nice man told Puppy Number 5 that she would be the perfect Christmas gift for his very nice wife.

And she was.  His very nice wife loved that she ran and jumped and tumbled-head-over-tail.  And she, just like her very nice husband, smiled and laughed and ran and jumped and tumbled-head-over-tail with her. And they both hugged and smiled and said “Merry Christmas!” and then they began to call Puppy Number 5, "Lily".

Puppy Number 5 loved her new name.  The very nice wife explained that Lily meant graceful, beautiful, loyal, and smart and that it suited her perfectly.  Lily thought so too and she ran and jumped and tumbled-head-over-tail – very gracefully.

Lily thought about her very nice Mother, who she loved very much, and knew that she was right.  This was an extra special family that God had chosen for her and she loved her new family more than anything else in the world.  So she ran and jumped and tumbled-head-over-tail some more.

Morning Coffee - Live in the Deep

"If you live on the surface of life by focusing on ever-changing phenomena, you will find yourself echoing the words of Solomon:  'Meaningless! Meaningless! Everything is meaningless!'”

Sarah Young
Jesus Calling
I love this analogy, living on the surface of life. Isn’t this what the world is pulling us to do, especially right now; live shallow where every worldly – and constantly changing - thing is calling for our time and attention?

During this season of Advent, it might be good for me to remember that the real Christmas story is found in the deep – far away from the clamor, chaos and glitz.

Time for a second cup of coffee and some time spent in the deep.

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Ice Luminaries - Repost

I've been thinking about starting to make my Christmas Ice Candle Luminaries.  I posted about these once before - but I think it's been a couple of years so thought I would mention them again.  These big ice globes are so easy to make yet are so naturally pretty.

My little freezer is pretty empty so I have lots of room to store these until Christmas Eve and while I won't have my official Candle Lighter to give them a good start, I may just count on him to keep them lit through the Christmas night.

Here are the directions in case you want to try them.

Supplies Needed:

1 Ice Cream Pail – or something similar
1 large balloon
Water
Freezer

Attach your balloon to your facet and fill with water until the balloon fills the bucket.

Blow into the balloon to flatten out the top of the water and tie off the balloon.

Put the bucket containing the filled balloon into your freezer for about 14 hours - or until you have solid frozen walls but still a liquid center.  Remove bucket and pop the balloon.

Using a screwdriver or small hammer, poke through the top of the ice making a hole large enough to allow the lighting of the candle.

Pour out the remaining water and remove from bucket.

Just add a candle and Ta Da! You now have a beautiful luminary for Christmas Eve.

(Obviously they can be frozen outside too, if it’s cold enough. But the freezer gives you a constant temp and therefore, a constant freezing time for easier planning.)

Enjoy!

Morning Coffee - Merry Christmas Memories!

This is not - by any stretch of the imagination - a DYI, HGTV or Martha Stewart type blog but I did create a fun simple project last week that I am very happy with and thought I would share.

One thing my family and friends know about me is that I LOVE a new notebook.  So, as is usually the case, I received two new ones as Christmas gifts.  Granddaughter Meghan gave me one that I am now using for my knitting notes and my friend Audrey gave me a Christmas themed one.

Matthew 2:10:  “When they saw the star, they were filled with joy.”

Using this notebook, I decided to make a simple record of our Christmas 2010 – and then continue with each Christmas hereafter.  Simple being the operative word here; very simple!

First I made a bullet list of activities and highlights of our month.  I listed the Advent book I used, fun decorating ideas, cookies baked, gifts given/received and services attended.  Just quick little notes.

Next I created at my Walgreen’s photo store a 5 x 7 collage print of 7 or so pictures from our month.  I attached that to the page opposite my bullet list.  And presto I now have a permanent record of Christmas 2010.  Additionally I tucked in one of the greeting cards we sent this year and I may include a few other cards and photos received.

“Easy peasy” as my daughter would say.  Yet next December it will be fun to relive the events of this past Christmas and add to it memories of Christmas 2011 – and then 2012 and so forth!

I believe I’m going to pour another cup of coffee, grab one of Mom’s good sugar cookies and once again enjoy my memories of Christmas 2010!

Merry Christmas!

The Prince of Peace

December 25

"His name shall be called Emmanuel . . . God with us." (Matt. 1:23) .
"The Prince of Peace" (Isa. 9:6).

"There's a song in the air!
There's a star in the sky!
There's a mother's deep prayer,
And a baby's low cry!
And the star rains its fire
While the beautiful sing,
For the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King."

"Maybe Christmas...perhaps... means a little bit more!."

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling, "How could it be so?
"It came without ribbons. It came without tags.
"It came without packages, boxes or bags."
And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store.
"Maybe Christmas...perhaps... means a little bit more!."

Dr. Seuss - How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

This is a favorite passage of mine.  (And all the more so after a day of wrapping, tying and tagging.)

Merry Christmas!
